Over-molding plastic materials

Selecting the appropriate molding material is essential for product application and performance. It is important to ensure a temperature gap (melting point) between the hard and soft plastics, with a minimum difference of 30°C or higher. The molding temperature of the base material should be higher than that of the cover material. We offer the following materials for over-molding:

  • The material initially injected is referred to as the base or base material, typically consisting of hard plastics such as ABS, PP, PA6/PA66-GF, PC, PC+ABS, and others.
  • The material injected subsequently is known as the cover material, typically comprising elastic resins such as synthetic rubber, TPU, TPR, TPE, soft PVC, and others.

In over-molding, to prevent the gate point from appearing on the part surface, the cavity and core are typically reversed compared to the mold for the skeleton. This means that the cavity for the skeleton faces the core of the oversold, while the core for the skeleton faces the cavity of the overmold

In over-molding, injection is only required for a specific section of the material. Therefore, there is no need to cover the entire skeleton inside the mold. As shown in the picture, only that section of the part needs to be covered. However, it is essential to ensure that there is no shifting or crushing of the part when placed inside the oversold during mold clamping. Additionally, it is crucial to maintain balance during mold opening and clamping.

In over-molding production, the operator or a mechanical arm (with high demands on its precision) places the part into the mold cavity. The parting surface of the part and the mold must fit closely together. Then, the cavity and core are brought together for injection.
